Salary Range: $70,000 to $75,000 based on experience

Position Summary
The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the Luzerne County Historical Society (LCHS) and provides visionary leadership to advance the Society’s mission of preserving and promoting the rich history and heritage of Luzerne County. The Executive Director oversees all aspects of operations, including strategic planning, fundraising, financial management, collections care, education and programming, staff and volunteer management, community engagement, and external relations. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors and works collaboratively with board members, staff, and volunteers to ensure the Society’s long-term sustainability and impact.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Administration
Provide overall strategic direction, leadership, and management of LCHS programs, staff (one full time, two part-time), and operations.
Implement the Society’s mission and vision through effective planning, goal setting, and evaluation.
Manage day-to-day operations of all six sites and organizational programming.
Oversee budgeting, financial management, and reporting in partnership with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and CPA.
Recruit and train all staff.
Oversee Volunteer Coordinator.
Fundraising & Development
Oversee a comprehensive fundraising program to ensure the organization’s financial sustainability.
Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual, corporate, and foundation donors; manage annual appeals, major gifts, and planned giving programs.
Provide leadership for ongoing capital campaigns and special fundraising initiatives.
Engage the Board of Directors and Development Committee in fundraising strategy and relationship-building efforts.
Community Engagement & Communications
Serve as the primary spokesperson and ambassador for LCHS, strengthening community relationships and institutional visibility.
Oversee marketing, media relations, and public communications to promote programs, exhibitions, and events.
Support the design and dissemination of newsletters, press releases, and digital content.
Enhance public engagement through dynamic programming, outreach, and partnerships with schools, community organizations, and civic groups.
Collections, Exhibits & Programs
Ensure proper care, documentation, and interpretation of the Society’s collections in accordance with professional museum standards.
Collaborate with staff, board members, and volunteers to develop and implement compelling exhibits, educational programs, and public events that connect audiences with local history.
Advance initiatives related to major historical commemorations and anniversaries.
Governance & Board Relations
Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance and strategic oversight.
Provide regular updates and reports on organizational performance, financial status, and program outcomes.
Support board development, recruitment, and training to strengthen leadership capacity.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
Minimum 5-10 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit, museum, or cultural organization.
Demonstrated success in fundraising, including major gifts, grants, and sponsorships.
Strong financial management and organizational skills.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
Experience working with boards, committees, and community stakeholders.
Proficiency in CRM systems, Microsoft Office, and digital communication tools.
Passion for history, education, and community service.
Preferred Attributes
Advanced degree in nonprofit management, history, museum studies, or related field.
Knowledge of Luzerne County and Northeastern Pennsylvania’s cultural and philanthropic landscape.
Proven ability to inspire teams, donors, and community partners.
Visionary leadership style with creativity, strategic thinking, and a collaborative spirit.
