Executive Director (Attorney)

Leonard Workforce Solutions is recruiting an Executive Director (Attorney) for my client, Lackawanna Pro Bono in Scranton, PA.

ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW:

Lackawanna Pro Bono is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1997 for the purpose of providing free

civil legal services to people who have very low incomes by matching eligible individuals to attorneys who have

agreed to volunteer their services. Services provided by the attorney volunteers range from advice and brief

service to representation in contested litigation, depending on the nature and merits of the legal problem.

Services are provided only for legal problems in Lackawanna County. The organization has four full time

permanent employees and one part time employee and operates from office space in downtown Scranton

donated by the Lackawanna Bar Association.

The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations, including

strategic planning, program development and execution, fundraising, financial management, staff leadership,

and community engagement. The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors. All staff report to the

Executive Director.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Leadership & Community Engagement

  • Engage in long term planning and goal development;

  • Build and maintain relationships in the community, including with local lawyers, the bar

    association, the courts, community leaders, donors, and other non-profit organizations;

  • Foster a positive work environment committed to the organization’s mission.

2. Service Delivery: Arrange for the provision of high quality civil legal services to financially qualified clients

through attorneys who volunteer their services.

  • Oversee the intake process;

  • Collect client file materials, match clients to pro bono volunteers, and periodically follow up on

    matches;

  • Collect and maintain client and attorney volunteer data;

  • Respond to client concerns;

  • With Development & Outreach Coordinator, plan and execute outreach to the client community.

  • Support current pro bono volunteers;

  • Recruit new pro bono volunteers.

3. Human Resources

  • Hire, train, supervise, and provide leadership to staff;

  • Oversee payroll, employee benefits, and employee leave;

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and provide leadership to office volunteers.

4. Finance

  • Develop the organization’s annual budget, for Board approval;

  • Monitor adherence to the annual budget;

  • Conduct the organization’s day-to-day fiscal affairs, including banking, payment of bills, monitoring

    cash flow, and maintaining the appropriate records;

  • Monitor and manage the organization’s finances, including investments;

  • Work with accounting firm on preparation of annual reviewed Financial Statements, IRS Form 990,

    and PA Bureau of Charitable Organizations filings;

  • Provide regular revenue and expense updates to the Board.

5. Fundraising & Grants: Raise funds sufficient to provide the resources needed to meet the organization’s

goals.

  • IOLTA Grant

- Prepare and submit the organization’s annual application for funding from the PA IOLTA Board;

- Prepare and submit quarterly reports required by IOLTA;

- Ensure compliance with IOLTA grant requirements.

  • Seek grant opportunities.

  • Work with Development Coordinator on fundraising efforts, including annual golf tournament and

    annual Gala.

6. Information Technology

  • Oversee and arrange for the purchase and maintenance of IT software and hardware;

  • Work with managed services provider to assure computer security and regular backup of data.

7. General Administrative

  • Supervise day-to-day office activities;

  • Assure that appropriate insurance coverage is maintained, including general business insurance,

    workers compensation, and professional liability coverage.

8. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

  • Ensure that the organization deploys an internal culture and external services that promote

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Active law license (PA preferred).

  • Commitment to equal justice for all.

  • General practice experience.

  • Preference for legal experience with indigent or underprivileged clients.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to manage wide-ranging responsibilities and to direct others in managing their responsibilities.

  • Ability to work effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Successful candidate must be kind, organized, energetic, detail oriented, able to delegate, and personable

    and must convey vision and integrity.

COMPENSATION:

Compensation will depend on experience.
